Big family day at the Waldbad Günzburg

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, all visitors will have free admission. The new catering area will also be ready by then.

The Waldbad in Günzburg is one of the most popular destinations in the region in summer. The new bathing season started on May 11 and 14 days later a real highlight awaits visitors: the family day on May 24, which entertains guests from morning to evening with all kinds of attractions. This Saturday also marks the official opening of the new catering area.

Since the late summer of 2023, numerous renovation and new construction measures have been taking place around the Waldbad. The 2024 millennium flood and water damage in December in the “Esstisch bei Joe”, which was about to open, delayed the construction work. But in a few days, all the work will be completed and Stadtwerke Günzburg is inviting you to a big family day that starts at 9 am. What you can look forward to on May 24: Free entry to the Waldbad all day long. “We would like to thank our many bathers for their loyalty and the high level of understanding they have shown over the past year during the construction work. With our investments, we have made the Waldbad even more visually appealing and fit for the future,” says our Stadtwerke board member Lothar Böck.

The outdoor facilities were redesigned, and the operations building and catering area were rebuilt or converted. Despite massive water damage during the renovation of the restaurant area at the end of 2024, which meant that the entire floor structure had to be dismantled, among other things, there were no negative effects on the opening of this year’s pool season. Wood as a raw material is of great importance at the “Esstisch bei Joe” restaurant run by tenant Josef Fritz. Wood from ash trees that had to be felled on the Waldbad site in the winter of 2023 for safety reasons has been used in the 55-seat dining room, which is accessible all year round. Thanks to the great willingness of companies, clubs and private individuals, these gaps were closed again with new plantings. The wall coverings, counter, tables and benches of the new kiosk were made from the wood of the old Waldbad ash trees. More than 300 seats are available in the outdoor area. A mini-golf course and an extended playground with additional attractions will also be available again when the new restaurant and the beautiful beer garden open.

A highlight of the family day at the Waldbad will be Tobi van Deisner’s performance at 1 pm. The Günzburg balloon artist has been delighting people of all ages for many years with his hilarious and spectacular shows. Afterwards, magician Magic Martin from Germaringen will be performing at 2.30 pm. He offers lots of magic, fun and entertainment.

Goal wall shooting, a trial dive by the Günzburg diving club, a bouncy castle and information stands from PERI – the main sponsor of the family day -, the Förderverein Waldbad Günzburg e.V., Stadtwerke Günzburg and Landesgartenschau GmbH round off the special day at the Waldbad in the afternoon. The musical accompaniment in the afternoon will be provided by Radio 7 with DJ Chris Montana.

The pool closes at 8 p.m. and the family day ends in the evening in the beer garden. Günzburg’s Lord Mayor Gerhard Jauernig is looking forward to the Family Day on May 24 and says: “The Stadtwerke Günzburg has put together a fantastic program. Visitors of all ages will be splendidly entertained throughout the day and can enjoy our beautiful Waldbad. Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that it will be a sunny day.”

There will be a family day at the Waldbad on May 24. The new catering area will also be ready in time for the event. The anticipation is correspondingly great among (from left) Lord Mayor Gerhard Jauernig, leaseholder Josef Fritz and Lothar Böck, Managing Director of Stadtwerke.

Günzburg and Burgau introduce a new combined ticket for both outdoor pools

Families can save a lot of money on visits to the Waldbad and Gsundbrunnenbad this summer.

Günzburg. This year, the two towns of Burgau and Günzburg are setting a joint example of family friendliness and regional cooperation: this summer, families can purchase an attractive, discounted combined ticket for the first time, which allows them to visit both outdoor pools in the region.

The Gsundbrunnenbad in Burgau and our Günzburger Waldbad offer many attractions for young and old. The two outdoor pools in the northern district are two of the most popular leisure facilities in the region in summer – with diving platforms, swimmers’, non-swimmers’ and children’s paddling pools, several slides, spacious sunbathing areas, playgrounds, table tennis tables, a large gastronomic offer and much more. Both outdoor pools will open in a few days: the Gsundbrunnenbad in Burgau on Saturday, May 10 and our Waldbad in Günzburg on Sunday, May 11.

The new combined ticket, which guarantees swimming fun in a double pack, is valid for parents and single parents with at least one child up to the age of 18. With this innovative offer, both cities want to promote leisure fun for families, further increase the attractiveness of the two outdoor pools and strengthen the community in the region.

“We are delighted to be working with Burgau to create an innovative offer that focuses on families. The new combined ticket is a great opportunity to explore our wonderful outdoor pools and have fun together,” says Günzburg’s Lord Mayor Gerhard Jauernig. Burgau’s mayor Martin Brenner agrees and continues: “For us, the focus is on promoting family life and strengthening the regional community. This project shows how we can create significant added value for our citizens through close inter-municipal cooperation.”

The new combined ticket is available at the ticket offices of both outdoor pools and is valid for the entire swimming season – online purchase is not possible. The new offer gives families the opportunity to visit both outdoor pools at a significantly reduced price. Instead of 189 euros for both family season tickets, the new combined ticket costs just 130 euros – a saving of more than 30 percent. “With the combined ticket, we want to offer families a simple, flexible and, above all, cost-effective way to discover our various outdoor pools and spend wonderful hours in the water together. I am convinced that this offer will inspire many families and help to make our region even more liveable,” says Lothar Böck, our Stadtwerke manager.

Burgau’s outdoor pool manager Sebastian Wagner is looking forward to many new visitors to the Gsundbrunnenbad and is already looking to the future: “The combined ticket is a first-time experiment that should not remain a one-day wonder. If the offer is well received, a continuation is planned.”

The Waldbad opens the swimming season on May 11.

The preparatory work is in full swing. Admission is now via the new access area.

In four weeks’ time, we will be opening the gates of the Waldbad to the many visitors once again. The swimming season starts this year on Sunday, May 11. A few things are new this year.

The most important change is right at the beginning: the forecourt has been redesigned. Gone are the days of the temporary entrance in front of the camper van site; admission is now via the new access area. The new sanitary facilities are also operational and can be used by all visitors. “Over the past few months, we have carried out extensive renovation and new construction work. I am delighted that these have now been completed and that our Waldbad can shine in new splendor,” says our Stadtwerke board member Lothar Böck.

Since last year, we have been offering the option of conveniently purchasing admission tickets before your visit via our online store and presenting them as a digital ticket at the ticket office. Of course, tickets can still be purchased on site at the ticket office in the Waldbad.

The technology and green areas are currently being brought up to scratch. The pools are being cleaned and will be filled with water next week. “The opening of our Waldbad is a special event every year and an important signal for the start of summer in Günzburg. Our outdoor pool is not only a place for recreation and sporting fun, but also an important meeting place for our citizens of all ages. I cordially invite everyone to visit our beautiful Waldbad, enjoy the sun and the cool water and have a great time with family and friends.”

The Waldbad will be open daily between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. this bathing season from May 11, weather permitting, and admission prices will remain at the same low level.

The entire Waldbad team is looking forward to welcoming lots of bathers!

After the water damage in December 2024 – Reconstruction of the catering area has begun

Shortly before the opening of the catering area in the Waldbad, there was massive water damage there in mid-December. Fortunately, the wing with the new operating and sanitary facilities was spared from the damage.

After the damage occurred, we immediately began to take measures to minimise the damage. In particular, the entire catering wing including the fitted kitchen had to be cleared, tiles and wall panelling removed down to a height of around 60 centimetres, the walls opened, the insulation removed, the screed and the entire floor structure dismantled down to the floor slab. This work was all completed before Christmas so that the extensive drying work could begin immediately. This is currently still ongoing and should be completed in the next few days.

Reconstruction of the catering area can then begin. Together with the architecture and planning office, the reconstruction work will be coordinated with the affected trades and is expected to begin in February. Stadtwerke is in close dialogue with all the trades involved. However, a final completion date cannot yet be defined.

According to the latest estimates, the damage amounts to a six-figure sum. ‘The current situation is a major challenge for all those affected. However, I would like to emphasise that the work now required will not have any negative impact on the opening of this year’s swimming season at the Waldbad,’ says Böck, the Stadtwerke board member.

The 2024 Waldbad season ends at noon on Sunday, September 15

The days are shorter, the weather is cooler. The Waldbad season is coming to an end for this year, also in view of the weather forecasts. To round things off, there will be another dog swim on Monday, September 16.

After the Waldbad had to take a two-month break due to the floods at the beginning of June, the past few weeks since reopening on August 6 have been a complete success. The weather has cooperated perfectly and the many guests have given the Waldbad great support by visiting the facility. Holders of season tickets can recharge their purchased annual tickets in the coming year and use them again.

Stadtwerke CEO Lothar Böck would like to thank everyone who has taken advantage of the sunny days over the past few weeks. “We are glad that we were able to reopen the Waldbad after the flood damage – to everyone’s delight,” Böck continues.
This year’s season at the Günzburg Waldbad ends on September 15 at 12 noon. All weatherproof swimmers are invited to take advantage of the last few days until then. Afterwards, on Monday, September 16, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., there will once again be a dog swim for the four-legged friends.

“We are particularly looking forward to the 2025 season, when the new building and catering area will be completed,” says Böck.

The Günzburg Waldbad now has a support association

Bernd Röllig has been appointed as chairman. Goals are the promotion of swimming and communal health care.

Günzburg. Hot summer, cool water. Who doesn’t automatically associate these two words with a pool that guarantees refreshment and relaxation? The Waldbad Günzburg offers space for all generations to swim, sunbathe, play, laze around, meet friends or just relax at the end of the day. Now, the Förderverein Waldbad Günzburg was recently founded.

The Board of Directors and the management of Stadtwerke Günzburg decided to found a sponsorship association to provide long-term support for the Waldbad. The founding meeting took place on June 4, 2024 in the meeting room of Stadtwerke Günzburg and was attended by ten people. The elections of the seven-member board produced the following result:

  • 1st Chairman: Bernd Röllig
  • 2nd Chairman: Lothar Böck
  • Treasurer: Bettina Hofmiller
  • Secretary: Johann Stelzle
  • Assessors: Maria Buck-Fritz, Dagmar Specht, Helmut Lochbrunner

The purpose of the association is to promote swimming and communal health care. These statutory purposes are to be realized in particular by supporting the Waldbad in an idealistic and financial way, especially by raising funds to ensure the permanent preservation of the Waldbad. Funding can be provided, for example, for play equipment, sunshades and sails, benches and trees, as well as technical equipment in and around the pools. In order to realize this, a corresponding commitment from interested parties, friends and supporters of the Waldbad is required.

“Our aim is to gain many enthusiastic members and supporters for the association and also to develop exciting and interesting ideas for the long-term preservation of our unique Günzburg forest pool,” says Stadtwerke CEO Lothar Böck, who is also the second chairman of the Förderverein Waldbad Günzburg e.V..

Günzburg’s Waldbad is currently undergoing extensive modernization. In particular, a new entrance area, changing rooms and sanitary facilities as well as a new, attractive forecourt are intended to create an even more inviting atmosphere in future.

The Waldbad ist now open again

Many people in the region have been waiting weeks for this news:

Günzburg’s Waldbad has reopened. From today, 6 August, 12:30 pm, the pool is open again. You can splash and slide, swim and jump in the swimmer’s pool.

Until recently, it was completely unclear when and whether the Waldbad would be able to reopen at all this season. This was solely due to the high groundwater level. As long as the large underground water masses pressed against parts of the pools, the pools had to remain filled with water. There was too great a risk that the pool could otherwise lift and be severely damaged. Fortunately, the groundwater level finally dropped steadily and far enough to allow the pool area under the diving tower to be drained completely.
All the pools have now been completely cleaned, the technology is fully functional and the paths and sunbathing areas have been cleared of mud for some time. The pools have been filled with fresh water, chlorinated and sampled. Now that the tests have been positive, today’s reopening is imminent.
We are all looking forward to welcoming many visitors and hopefully many more wonderful summer days and enjoyable hours in our Waldbad.

Anyone who would like a pro-rata refund of their season ticket, as the bathing season is arithmetically half over, can register this directly at the Waldbad ticket office. However, Stadtwerke would be delighted if this was waived and the value was regarded as a donation to the pool, which was badly affected by the flood disaster.

Lord Mayor Gerhard Jauernig is delighted that the Waldbad, Günzburg’s summer meeting place, will still be open this season: “After the images of the floods at the beginning of June, nobody would have expected it to open this year. We are all the happier that we can make the pools and the beautiful park available to our citizens during the summer holidays.”

Extensive clearing and cleaning work is underway.

The tidying and cleaning of the entire Waldbad is in full swing. The service buildings have already been cleaned and the area around the kiosk is already looking good again. However, the walkways and the sunbathing lawn are still very muddy and the areas around the pools still need to be cleaned.

The pools themselves cannot be drained at the moment. The groundwater level is still too high and there would be a risk that the pools would rise when the water is drained. So patience is still required here. Once the water has been drained, the extensive and time-consuming cleaning of the pools will begin.

We are therefore currently unable to give a date for reopening, we will of course inform you in good time, but ask for your patience.

The Waldbad remains closed

We would like to keep you up to date on the Waldbad. Due to the heavy flooding yesterday (Sunday), the pool remains closed until further notice.

We have made every effort to secure the pool with sandbags and a number of embankments to prevent the worst from happening. However, this was only partially successful. The pools and the sunbathing area were completely flooded. It is not yet clear to what extent the technology and parts of the new building have been affected.

We will of course provide further updates in due course.
